Nasa yesterday delayed shuttle Atlantis' homecoming from its space station construction mission while engineers tried to figure out if a mystery object spotted flying near the ship resulted from some unknown damage to the shuttle.

Atlantis and its six-member crew left the International Space Station on Sunday in preparation for a landing originally planned for today at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Mission managers postponed the landing for at least a day after a small dark object was seen in video taken by a remotely operated camera in the shuttle's cargo hold.
