Former Italy international Gianluca Pagliuca set a new record for appearances in Serie A by a goalkeeper with his 571st game on Sunday.

The record had been held by Italy's 1982 World Cup-winning captain and former Juventus keeper Dino Zoff.

Pagliuca, who helped Italy reach the 1994 World Cup final in the US, set the new record in his club Ascoli's 1-1 draw with Messina. The 39-year-old made his Serie A debut for Sampdoria in May 1988 and went on to play for Inter and Bologna.

Milan captain Paolo Maldini is the only current player in Serie A to have made more appearances than Pagliuca. The defender has played 583 games in the top flight.
