The European Affairs Committee of the Italian Parliament has appointed Green MP Arnold Cassola as rapporteur on issues related to the regulation of hunting in Italy.
Prof. Cassola said: "My report will highlight the fact that the national law regulating hunting should be strictly enforced.
"This should solve the current legal anomaly and loopholes through which around 11 Italian regions, including Sardinia, Lombardy, Liguria and Veneto, have allowed spring hunting".
He stressed that the current situation in these regions in Italy is in violation of EU legislation and in fact the European Commission has already started infringement procedures against Italy.
Prof. Cassola stated: "The wise- guy game being played by the Italian regions is now over. The EU has already informed the Italian government that should the current situation persist it will freeze Italy's rural development funds for the 2007-2013 period, which amount to €8.3 billion."
