The 2006/2007 women's football season kicks off this evening at 7.30 with the Super Cup match between champions Hibernians and league runners-up Birkirkara.

This curtain-raiser is being played at the Luxol Ground, St Andrews.

Meanwhile, the league programme is due to start today week at the same venue. Sta Venera Lightnings and newcomers Mgarr United meet in the league's opening match at 8.15 p.m.

There are eight teams competing in the women's national league, which is expected to generate significant interest among the participants and their supporters. The teams, representing a fairly extensive cross-section of localities around the island, are Birkirkara, Hibernians, Melita, Mgarr, Mosta, Rabat, Sliema Raiders (formerly Raiders) and Sta Venera.
