Rangers slipped behind in the Scottish Premier League with a 2-1 defeat at Hibernian yesterday thanks to a double from New Zealander Chris Killen who was sent off later in the game.

Rangers now trail champions Celtic by four points after seven games. Celtic top the standings with 16 points after their 1-0 home win over Dunfermline on Saturday.

Hearts climbed to second on 13 points with a 1-0 win at Motherwell later yesterday, Jamie Mole squeezing home an angled shot in the 69th minute.

It was Rangers' first defeat under French manager Paul Le Guen, who said: "Our first half was so poor and we were dominated and they deserved the victory."

Hibs took the lead after just eight minutes when Killen steered a magnificent 14-metre header into the top right-hand corner from Michael Stewart's free-kick.

Rangers levelled through Slovakian striker Filip Sebo who latched on to Chris Burke's teasing cross from the right and powered a downward header past Polish keeper Zibby Malkowski from 10 metres in the 65th.

Killen scored the winner with nine minutes left when he powered another header high into the net from six metres.

The New Zealander was sent off soon afterwards for a second booking when he fouled keeper Allan McGregor at a high ball then clashed with Rangers' French defender Julien Rodriguez.

Rodriguez had had an early escape when TV pictures showed him felling Killen with a forearm smash at a 27th-minute corner, an incident missed by the referee.

In stoppage time, Rangers' Phil Bardsley was dismissed for picking up a second yellow for failing to retreat at a corner.

Bardsley will now miss the Old Firm collision with Celtic next weekend.
