FOI Director General Wilfred Kenely participated in a panel discussion entitled "Do we need a wage policy?", organised by the Reggie Miller Foundation of the General Workers Union. The discussion formed part of a half-day seminar which touched on this issue from a social and economic perspective.

Mr Kenely argued that statistics are clearly showing a shift in employment towards high-end manufacturing and towards services, requiring a more specialised workforce. This trend, he said, is also being reflected in the wage structures and that any wage policy should take this into account. He also insisted that there has to be a direct correlation between wage structures and productivity structures so that industry and the country, remain competitive.

The discussion panel also included Professor Joseph Falzon from the University of Malta and Ms Rebecca Gatt from the General Workers Union. It was chaired by Mr Benny Borg Bonello.
