¤ President George W. Bush went to the US Capitol to prod fellow Republicans to back his plans to track and try terrorism suspects, but some pushed ahead with a competing measure the White House opposes. "I reminded them that the most important job of government is to protect the homeland," Mr Bush, accompanied by Vice President Dick Cheney, told reporters after privately meeting with Republicans.

¤ President George W. Bush and South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun papered over differences over North Korea while pledging to try to resume six-nation talks to curb Pyongyang's nuclear programme . The two leaders used a White House summit to play up their common goal of pushing North Korea back to the negotiating table after a nearly year-long hiatus.

¤ The leaders of India and Pakistan will hold weekend talks in Cuba, hoping to ease tensions after a year of recriminations over terror attacks and Kashmir, Indian and Pakistani officials said. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, who last met a year ago at the United Nations, will meet tomorrow. With both under political pressure at home, expectations are modest, the officials said.

Leftists dismantled tents and stacked up belongings on the main Reforma avenue after leaders told them to end an encampment downtown by this morning to allow a military parade to pass.
