The tail of Swedish pilot Gábor Varga's plane was yesterday retrieved by a team of army divers from the sea at the mouth of Marsamxett harbour. It is considered to be an important element in the ongoing investigation of last Sunday's Aero GP crash.
The divers continued their search throughout the week for the debris of the planes which collided over the entrance to the harbour.
They have retrieved the cameras that were mounted on both planes among other things. Mr Varga died after he lost the tail of his Yak plane which was clipped by that of 37-year-old Irish pilot Eddie Goggins flying behind him.
The Swedish pilot died from drowning, though he also sustained numerous injuries, according to autopsy results.
Mr Goggins had a lucky escape when his parachute opened just as he was just about to hit the water. He sustained minor injuries and was released from St Luke's Hospital shortly after treatment.
He was permitted to leave the island on Wednesday following the magisterial inquiry.
