Like Michael Hewitt and Robert Goulston, I too initially came to the conclusion that cheap flights to Malta from Luton were futile.
I then looked for frequency and price of transport from central London (say) to Luton and found out that www.easybus.co.uk do one approximately every hour from 2 a.m. to 10 p.m. for less than £12 return.
That takes approximately one hour.
One can also take a free shuttle service from the airport to Luton Airport Parkway station from where the Luton Airport Express takes one to St Pancras train and tube station in central London in just 28 minutes. A first class ticket costs £33.40 (return) and an express class £22.40 (return). The service runs from 7.38 a.m. to 9.07 p.m. Other operators also run regular services through the night from Luton Airport to London Bridge and Blackfriars stations.
The Luton and District 757 Greenline coach runs a regular express service from Luton Airport into London Victoria train and tube station 24 hours, seven days a week. For a maximum price of £15 (return) you could be there in 90 minutes.
It might not be everyone's cup of tea to travel via cheaper airlines but I am positive that the competition will drive prices down for BA and Air Malta. The only big expense that remains outstanding is the high airport tax.
