I refer to the letter written by Ray Bondin (September 13) comparing two pictures of works in progress, one in the main street of Vilinius and the other in Republic Street, Valletta, in which he appealed to the council "to make sure that there are simple safety precautions in such a busy street".

The Valletta council welcomes the regulations recently launched by the Ministry for Rural Affairs and Environment for better safety precautions on sites.

For the information of readers, in order to protect citizens' health and safety, the Valletta council does not grant permits for work during business hours in Republic Street and the other pedestrian areas.

The truck captured by Dr Bondin was on the street without the necessary authorisation of the council. Investigations into the issue concluded that the truck involved was engaged by the Department of Culture for the Victory Day celebrations.
