BirdLife has called on the Commissioner of Police to put a check on illegal hunting as bird migration goes into full swing.

According to BirdLife, Night Herons and Grey Herons have been reported shot in Ta' Qali, Siggiewi and Pwales. Birds of prey including Marsh Harriers, Honey Buzzards and Falcons were also reported shot in Girgenti, Tas-Salib, Siggiewi, Dingli, Delimara and in Gozo.

Fourteen Honey Buzzards were killed on Monday in Girgenti, Tas-Salib when they came low to search for rest. On Tuesday, 60 Marsh Harriers came under fire, the NGO said.

BirdLife is calling for hunting to stop in September in the afternoons to give birds of prey the chance to reach the islands and find a resting place.
