An 18-year-old was yesterday charged with seriously injuring his aunt and slightly injuring his uncle in what his defence lawyer described as a one-off incident.

Luaie Borg's lawyer, Shazoo Ghaznavi, told Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera that his client had intervened in a family argument to defend his mother and sister.

Mr Borg, of Cospicua, pleaded not guilty to seriously injuring his aunt Catherine Hussein with a pointed instrument and slightly injuring his uncle Paul Borg in Cospicua on Sunday at about midday.

He was granted bail on condition he does not leave his home without permission from the court and was bound by a Lm300 deposit and a personal guarantee of Lm1,000.

The magistrate ordered the police to carry out spot checks at Mr Borg's home and warned him that, if he was not found to be home, he would remain in jail until his case would be decided.

Police Inspector Alfred Mallia prosecuted.
