Close to 150 works of art are on display in Mdina to mark the 42nd anniversary of Malta's independence.

The exhibition was mounted by the Nationalist Party and is split into two sections: the first consists of 42 works by top local artists with a piece for every year since 1964.

This section features works by Willie Apap, Esprit Barthet, Josef Kalleya, Luciano Micallef, Antoine Camilleri, Anton Agius, Kenneth Zammit Tabona, Paul Carbonaro, Richard England, Andrew Diacono and Andrew Micallef among others.

They include ceramics, sculptures and paintings in various styles, from abstracts to still life to snapshots of the Maltese landscape.

The exhibits are spread out in eight different places in Mdina. The works of art of the first section are housed in Gallarija Cremona and Il Gattopardo art gallery while the rest can be seen at Caffe Medina, Ciappetti Restaurant, Fontanella Tea Gardens, The Mdina Experience, Palazzo Costanzo restaurant, Xara Palace Hotel and Corte Capitanale.

A catalogue entitled Rotta ta' l-Arti (Art trail), featuring all the exhibited works, has been published.

The exhibition was inaugurated last week by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and remains open until September 20.
