Alfred Camilleri, 55, of Marsalforn, and Mario Abdilla, 54, of London, both Valletta-born, were arraigned in court yesterday and charged with importing thousands of ecstasy pills with the intention to traffic in them.
The court, presided over by Magistrate Silvio Meli, accepted a request by the prosecution for the seizure of Mr Camilleri's assets.
Both pleaded not guilty and were remanded in custody. Police Inspector Norbert Ciappara prosecuted.
Mr Camilleri was assisted by Dr Josè Herrera, Mr Abdilla by Dr Franco Debono and Dr Charmaine Cherrette.
Police investigations led to the discovery of 9,500 Ecstasy pills in a postal packet which arrived from the UK on Thursday evening.
The police said the package contained a mirror in which the pills were concealed.
The find followed intensive police investigations over the last days in which personnel from the Customs Enforcement Section were also involved.
