Former England rugby coach Clive Woodward has been appointed Director of Elite Performance at the British Olympic Association, the BOA said.

Woodward, who guided England to victory in the rugby World Cup in 2003, will provide support and services for the 35 Olympic sports, working with each of them individually.

"It is a privilege to be joining the BOA at such an exciting time for British Olympic sport," the 50-year-old was quoted as saying.

Woodward quit as England rugby coach in September 2004 after seven years, having guided the team to 59 wins in 83 tests.

A life-long soccer fan, he switched codes when he was given a role by his friend and former Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe at the south coast club which was then in the Premier League. But he stepped down from his full-time position as technical support director at Southampton last week.
