A Libyan man was yesterday jailed for eight months after he admitted to stealing two mobile phones and other items.

Ali Mustafa Kabes, 30, who resides in Sliema, pleaded guilty during his arraignment when he was charged with stealing the two phones belonging to Emanuel Caruana, stealing several items from German Jennifer Hass and relapsing on and before Monday.

Mr Kabes was charged together with fellow Libyan Abdul Baset Dabia, 37, of Hamrun who was charged with inciting Mr Kabes to steal. Mr Dabia was also charged with stealing a car belonging to Anna Spiteri, who he lived with, driving without a licence and relapsing.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded in police custody.

After hearing that the two men would make different pleas, Magistrate Miriam Hayman ordered that the cases be heard separately. She then moved on to pass judgment in the case of Mr Kabes.

Police Inspector Romina Veneziani prosecuted.

Lawyer Martin Fenech appeared for Mr Kabes.

Lawyer Daniela Mangion represented Mr Dabia.
