September heralds the start of a new season at the St Paul Fencing Club (SPFC).

The club's administration is gearing up for the eventful months. An intensive programme of training has been designed with the first competitions planned for the last week of October.

Norman Martinez will again lead the senior men's team as well as coaching and promoting Epee. The current national champion, at both Foil and Epee, also took gold in the foil category at the Malta Open last June.

The senior men's team is also strengthened by long-standing members Alex Micallef, Alex Mallia, John Delicata, John Sammut and Marcus Muscat Baron.

Susan Ronald will be setting the standards for women's fencing after making it a double yet again in 2006 by winning the nationals in both weapons.

Following hot on her heels are Petra Ellul Mercer, Christine Borg Bonaci, Anya Soldotova, Rebecca Thomas and Petra Kogelnig, together with a dedicated group of novices showing constant improvement.

The SPFC, affiliated to the National Fencing Association, will be organising beginners' courses this month.
