Bezzina almost sure of overall victory after Ta' Qali first place

Notwithstanding the strong winds prevailing over the race route at Ta' Qali, Athleta Pembroke's Mark Herrera managed to equal the time he registered in the second race to win this third and penultimate leg of this year's Birkirkara St Joseph 5k Road Running Series.

Current overall leader James Douglas, of Birkirkara SJ, clocked his slowest time so far to finish second in 15:55, 10 seconds behind Herrera.

Another Pembroke runner, Brian Magri, was third in 16:12.

Lisa Bezzina, also of Pembroke, continued to dominate the women's category, virtually crowning herself the series winner with her third successive victory in 18:05.

Second-placed Angela Sammut, of St Patrick's, however, narrowed the gap to 28 seconds, finishing in 18:33. Joelle Cortis (Pembroke) was third in 19:07.

In the clubs' overall classification, Athleta Pembroke have taken the lead, followed by St Patrick's while Birkirkara SJ slipped to third place after having led for the first two races.

The fourth and final race of the series will be held on December 13 in Birkirkara.
