The General Workers Union may have internal problems, but that has not stopped it warning a number of hotels that it is prepared to order industrial action unless they agree to pay employees double pay for working public holidays falling on a weekend.
The union issued a statement yesterday saying that it had given a 10-day ultimatum to the management of all the Corinthia hotels, the Preluna hotel and all the hotels that are subsidiaries of Air Malta. If these hotels fail to honour the recommendations of the employment relations board, like other hotels, the union said it would call for industrial action.
In his letter, the hospitality section secretary Josef Bugeja demanded that the employees of these companies be paid double when working on a public holiday falling on the weekend.
A copy of the letter was sent to the industrial relations director Noel Vella.
