The idea of housing Malta's Parliament in the Main Guard, first mooted as far back as 1929 (The Sunday Times, August 20) still has some merit, even though Parliament is now larger and its functions are more numerous.

Today's requirements could be met, maintaining the present character of Valletta's centre, if the space provided by the Main Guard and its adjacent buildings were to be augmented by a modern and unobtrusive modern annex on the other side of Strait Street for the assembly hall and other offices.

The two premises would be joined by an ample underground passageway. Facilities for underground parking on Palace Square for MPs would also be possible.
