Appreciation - Paul Carachi
Godfrey Grima writes:
At the time I started out in journalism some 40 years ago, two giants straddled the Maltese speaking newspaper landscape - Anton Cassar, God bless him, is still with us, and Paul Carachi who, sadly, passed on this week. Both sowed the corn-seeds of popular journalism in trail blazing ways unthinkable today. We owe to both an extraordinary vision that spawned a species of daily newspapers written in the vernacular which, hard to believe now, did not exist then.
Both Mr Cassar and Mr Carachi for years worked at Allied Newspapers - and on that fabled but by then defunct title, Il-Berqa - before they left to set up l-orizzont at the Workers' Memorial Building.
Within months they were bringing down the curtains on an old and tired style of journalism. Gone, soon, was the jaundiced attitude journalists and editors had on how Maltese political social and economic events were to be covered, a style that shortchanged Maltese readers no end. Within a year Messrs Cassar and Carachi had brought about a sea-change in the practice of daily newspapers no one has been able to repeat since.
Mr Carachi epitomised the perfect journalist. He was a tireless foot soldier who would go to extremes to get his story right. He was fair minded and tough, a listener and a formidable questioner all rolled into one. He was once thrown out of a government press conference for tough quizzing a minister suspected of taking a backhander in exchange of issuing licences for the importation of potatoes. Later on in life, with Malta under a different administration, he ran into a similar squall with the late Lorry Sant, then a government minister with dark clouds hovering over his own reputation.
Mr Carachi had brains and guts to sell. You could spend hours listening to him defend his views and his values, even when these seemed to clash. He was a revolutionary and at the same time an avid critic of corruption inside the Labour Party as well as Dom Mintoff's maverick stands - still, unlike the way spoilt party men go leaking sensitive information to rival parties today, he remained loyal for years - until he could take no more. He then bravely asked the Speaker of the House to set his seat apart from the rest of the Labour Parliamentary group. It was all done in full public view. Never, however, did he betray his party even after being politically dumped and, was, for the first time in his life, if I'm no mistaken, jobless. Weaker men at the GWU and inside the MLP shamed themselves not backing this upright man they privately admired and envied.
But it is for his inspirational journalism that we shall all long remember Mr Carachi. He had a great talent for making his newspapers - first l-orizzont then Malta News - each day sound popular without being populist, innovative without being wacky, right without being arrogant and, for as much as he could help it, accurate.
He was vulnerable to every weakness known to journalists but he was forever an honest and just man.
Mr Carachi was, in the eyes of those who knew him well, a hugely likeable gentleman. In all the years after leaving Allied Newspapers he had only words of praise for Mabel Strickland, his one time boss and later his political rival.
The GWU owes it to this great journalist and to this generation to put on public display the principled journalism Mr Carachi first help introduce and then for many years later practised with such propriety, bravery and admiration.
