Hamburg have completed the signing of Argentina World Cup captain Juan Pablo Sorin from Villarreal. Sorin, 30, was presented to the media after signing a three-year contract with the Bundesliga club.
"This is an emblematic signing for the whole Bundesliga," Hamburg coach Thomas Doll told reporters. "Hamburg have brought in the captain of the Argentina national team."
Hamburg have paid a reported 2.5 million euros for the defender, who said he was delighted with the move.
"Hamburg are a big club," he said. "I've always found the Bundesliga interesting. Good football is played here."
Hamburg have had to remodel their defence after selling centre backs Daniel van Buyten and Khalid Boulahrouz to, respectively, Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
Dutchman Joris Mathijsen and Belgium's Vincent Kompany have come in to compensate and the arrival of Sorin will give Hamburg a further boost as they look to make progress in the Champions League and challenge for the Bundesliga title.
Doll's side will play Arsenal, Porto and CSKA Moscow in Group G of the Champions League.
