Extracts from waterpolo historian, the late Arthur J. Leaver's History of Waterpolo in Malta 1910-1988 featuring the year 1945...
Page 36: "Competitive waterpolo, organised by the ASA, commenced late in August, with the curtain rising in the first division encounter between rivals Neptunes and Sliema."
Page 37: "In one of several incidents four players were involved viz., brothers R. and F. Wismayer of Neptunes and Castillo and Kershaw of Sliema.
"Following this latter incident player Wismayer F. was sent out, however, despite that decision, Wismayer continued to play. As a result Sliema lodged a protest against infringement of the rules of the game.
"Manche opened the score for Neptunes but Scott of Sliema levelled things. Then having gained a penalty Podesta B. converted to make the final score 2-1 in favour of the St Julian's side.
"Eventually Sliema lost their protest as regards the incident of the above match, and Neptunes went on to win the league when they beat St Julian's 6-3 in the final league match."
These extracts should lay low once and forever the syndrome that appears annually from the Sliema faction sowing doubts over the 1945 league competition.
