Egypt striker Mido has returned to Tottenham Hotspur after the club reached agreement on a deal with Roma, the Premier League team announced on their website yesterday.

The 23-year-old spent a season and a half with Spurs after arriving on loan from the Italian side in January 2005. Mido scored 11 goals in 27 league appearances last season as Spurs qualified for the UEFA Cup but a groin injury followed by a knee injury ended his season a month early and he returned to Italy.

"I'm very happy to be back," he said. "It was and it always will be a great honour for me to play for Tottenham.

"I always knew in my heart I would be coming back. It is a fantastic move for me, I have some good friends here and it will be good to be back with the lads."

Financial details were not immediately published.

Spurs manager Martin Jol said: "We've been tracking Mido since his loan ended and we were always keen to bring him back.

"Roma took some persuading and I'm delighted to have him in the squad."

Mido previously played for Zamalek, Ghent, Ajax, Celta Vigo and Olympique Marseille.

The transfer came a day after Mido was recalled to Egypt's squad for Saturday's opening 2008 African Nations Cup qualifier against Burundi.
