A Danish elderly couple holidaying in Malta were injured yesterday - the husband critically - when they were hit by a car while crossing Il-Mediterran Street, Valletta in the afternoon, the police said.

The couple were rushed to hospital where the man, 69, was found to be suffering from serious head injuries. The woman sustained various fractures. The accident took place as a Peugeot driven by a 40-year-old man from Mosta was heading in the direction of the Great Siege Bell opposite the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

Magistrate Abigail Lofaro appointed a team of experts to help in an inquiry.

The police are investigating.
