Three new wards in a new Lm3 million block named Mother Teresa at St Vincent de Paul Residence for the Elderly will be opened within the next few days, the Department for the Elderly and Community Care said yesterday.

The new wards will be used by female residents who at present occupy another three wards which need extensive upgrading, the department said.

It said temporary alternative places have to be found to bed 30 residents since the number of beds in the new wards was smaller than that in the old block and the old block has to be emptied completely in view of the extensive works required there.

An agreement has been reached with the unions representing staff so that the number of workers in wards would be increased in order to maintain a good level of care, the department added, apologising for the inconvenience caused by this exercise.
