Maltese, Italian and EU experts put their heads together yesterday for the first session of a two-day technical meeting in Valletta of Frontex, the EU's border agency.

The meeting is intended to finalise the details of the planned patrols in the Mediterranean aimed at controlling illegal immigration.

The patrols are expected to start in the coming days.

The European Commission has asked Libya several times to declare its willingness to cooperate with the EU joint sea patrols in the Libya-Italy strait, but the North African country is reluctant to do so.

A high-level meeting between Libya, Malta and Italy is scheduled for September 6.
