The controversy over the inclusion of the George Cross in Maltese insignia is nothing new. It raises its head from time to time. Yet no one has ever challenged the widespread use of the eight-pointed cross made popular by the Order of St John of Jerusalem.

If the George Cross is seen as a symbol of foreign occupation of these islands, then in all fairness, so should the eight-pointed cross, now known as the Maltese Cross. However, whereas the George Cross is demonised, the Maltese Cross is exalted and adopted as an official symbol of all that is Maltese.

It is indeed hard to understand the workings of the mind...
