A few years ago the many orange groves in Lija were destroyed in the name of progress. They were replaced with concrete as houses and flats took their place. Now the village is threatened with another monstrous project.

An application has been put before Mepa (PA/04855/05) to build 18 flats and penthouses and underground car park including a lift to get to it. However, what is strange is that the address given is in Dun Karm Lia street when the main door of the present building is in Transfiguration Avenue. Is this a ploy to try and get away from the fact that part of the village core will be affected? Dun Karm Lia Street is a cul-de-sac and is only 19 feet wide so one can imagine what torture the residents of this street will have to go through if this project is approved.

I have written to the local council to urge them to object to this development because it will continue to ruin what was once the village known for its oranges which still appear on the coat of arms. I urge any residents who disagree with this project to contact the council.
