After many years of studies on how judo should be best introduced to beginners, the European Judo Union (EJU) recently launched its first training stage for juniors. This was held in Malta.
For the occasion a group of 18 youngsters, from Franco Capelletti's club in Brescia, joined 25 others from Malta in training sessions mixed with cultural activities.
One of the educational themes was the history of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and what better host could the prospective judokas have than the patron of the Malta Judo Federation, Andrew Bertie, the present Grand Master of the Order.
He joined the group of enthusiastic youngsters on the mat at the Hibernians Judo Club and assisted Capelletti and Eva Valcarel in preparing a very interesting introduction to techniques.
The Italian and Maltese juniors had the chance to visit places of historical interest during their stay.
The group also attended judo lessons conducted by international Kata judges and instructors.
The EJU stage placed the Maltese judo organisation on the European Kata map and the federation has already submitted a request to host next year's European Kata Championships.
The request was favourably received and now formal presentation will be made during a congress in Belgrade in December.
At present, the federation is preparing for the upcoming EJU Organisation, Administration and Medical Seminar in Malta.
Meanwhile, judo lessons for children will start again on September 23. Those interested may obtain more details by phoning 21-319944.
