Double European sprint champion Kim Gevaert said she was disappointed by the news that Marion Jones had failed a doping test.

"I was very disappointed when I heard about it," Belgium's Gevaert, who won the 100 and 200 metres titles at the European Championships earlier this month in Gothenburg, told reporters after finishing fifth in the 100 metres at Sunday's Monaco meeting.

"The world of athletics had given her a second chance after the BALCO case. Bizarrely, she took the risk to do it again. I must admit that I don't understand her behaviour."

Triple Olympic sprint champion Jones failed an initial doping test during the US Championships in June in Indianapolis, although the results of the second "B sample" have yet to be released.

Her coach, Steve Riddick, said he was sure Jones's second, or "B" sample would be negative.
