Five-times world champion Valentino Rossi (picture) grabbed pole position for today's Czech Grand Prix with a late surge in qualifying.

The Italian, on his Camel Yamaha, was fastest time at the 5.4-km Masaryk Ring in Brno yesterday by clocking 1:56.191.

Overall MotoGP leader Nicky Hayden, of the US, had to be content with fourth place while Spain's Dani Pedrosa, second in the standings 34 points behind Hayden, was down in ninth.

Italian Lori Capirossi will start second on the grid with American Kenny Roberts Jr third.
