Coeliac Association organises summer barbecue

The Coeliac Association Malta has recently organised another successful summer barbecue for its members, families and friends. For the second consecutive year, this was held at the Settimo Cielo Pool Deck of the Golden Tulip Vivaldi Hotel. Everybody enjoyed the delicious gluten-free spread specially prepared by the hotel's chefs.

This event is one of a series of fund-raising activities organised by the committee to help raise funds to create awareness about the coeliac condition in Malta, especially among the catering sector. If there is any cross-contamination in the preparation of the food, an individual with a coeliac condition could turn very ill for days.

The local association is a member state of the Association of European Coeliac Societies. Participation in the annual AOECS conference is of the utmost importance as it is through these meetings that the welfare of a coeliac individual comes first and foremost. There are on-going new developments, research and new gluten-free products on the market.

The association would like to thank the sponsors who helped to make this evening a success by donating hampers and gifts to be raffled during the event - the Golden Tulip Vivaldi Hotel, Foster Clark Products Ltd, V.J. Salomone Nutrition Line, V.J. Salomone Marketing Ltd, Alf. Gera and Sons Ltd, Collis Williams Ltd, Zamco Caterware Ltd, Consolidated Biscuits Co. Ltd, Victor's Jewelers, Edwin Caruana, Alf. Mizzi and Sons (Marketing) Group, P. Cutajar and Co. Ltd, Direct Imports Ltd, Marsovin Ltd, Mirachem Marketing Ltd and Emmanuel Delicata Co. Ltd.

The evening was rounded off when two of the association's young members presented a bouquet of flowers to Mary Rose Caruana, the association's chairperson.

Vodafone Malta Foundation supports Id-Dar tal-Providenza

The Vodafone Malta Foundation is supporting Id-Dar tal-Providenza by raising funds for the renovation of the swimming pool. Following the refurbishment, this pool will provide Id-Dar tal-Providenza with an urgently needed facility.

"Over 40 years, Id-Dar tal-Providenza has grown beyond recognition. It is now the leading provider of residential care for people with physical and intellectual disabilities. To continue functioning, it needs a lot of financial support and the Vodafone Malta Foundation is making a contribution towards ensuring that those who are vulnerable in our society are given the care they deserve," said Vodafone Malta Foundation chairperson, Gemma Mifsud Bonnici during the presentation of the donation to Mgr Lawrence Gatt, Id-Dar tal-Providenza director.

Id-Dar tal-Providenza started operating on September 12, 1965, when Mgr Michael Azzopardi decided it was time for action. During a live radio programme, he became the first person to publicly suggest that a home should be opened to care for those with physical and intellectual disabilities. This was to be done not just for the benefit of those being cared for but also to relieve their families.

"For the past 40 years, Id-Dar tal-Providenza has been caring for a number of persons with different needs and today, it provides accommodation and caters for all the necessities of 120 residents. Throughout all these years, we have managed to make ends meet thanks to the many benefactors, such as the Vodafone Malta Foundation, both in Malta and abroad, who share noble ideals and who have taken the initiative to contribute in some way to keep such a good organisation going," said Mgr Gatt.
