Enjoy the rhythm of reggae for charity on Wednesday
The laid back beats and rhythm of reggae will hit Golden Sands Bay on Wednesday night from 6 p.m., when partiers can join Malta's local 'travellers' scene for a live jamming performance complemented by fire dancers.
The night of reggae vibes is open to interpretation. If you own an instrument and feel the beat, bring both to the Bay and lock into the evening's line-up. Alternatively, lie back and enjoy the rhythm and fire dancers and indulge at the bar and barbecue stall, serving food by Borg Cold Stores. You might even win one of the event's spot prizes.
Reggae is an indigenous art form that evolved in the ghettoes of Kingston in Jamaica. The term usually distinguishes a particular style that evolved in the 1960s and has since spread around the world. In its broad sense, it includes the sub-genres roots reggae and the 1970s dancehall reggae.
Though it is usually associated with the Rastafarian movement, many reggae songs deal with the universal themes of love and social commentary. The style has a huge following across Europe and elsewhere, including Malta.
The Rhythm of Reggae night is an initiative of Kilimanjaro Challenge 3, which aims to raise funds to assist Amy Zahra, who lost all her fingers and thumbs and both lower legs to bacterial meningitis, and to furnish a school in Ethiopia run by Dun Gorg Grima of Moviment Gesù fil-Proxxmu. More details about both are online at: www.kilimanjarochallenge3.com
There is no entry fee to the evening's entertainment but the organisers are asking people to give a donation of around Lm2.
