The penultimate and longest race in the 2006 Birkirkara St Joseph Open Sea Series did not produce a sole winner with Dermot Galea and Gabriel Pace incredibly hitting the finishing buoy at San Giljan ASC simultaneously.

The four-kilometre swim is held immediately before the annual Gozo-Malta Challenge. The race started and finished at San Giljan ASC with a turnaround point off Qui-si-Sana in Sliema.

Notwithstanding bouts of adverse weather conditions throughout the race, the swimmers managed to achieve creditable finishing times with the leaders stopping the watch at 51 minutes 17 seconds.

Overall series leader Keith Galea was third in 51:27.

In the women's race, Isabelle Zarb clocked 1:02.56. Marthese Galea was second in 1:16.45.

The gruelling Gozo-Malta crossing, on August 26, starts from Ras il-Qala. The finish will be at the Barcelo Riviera & Spa beach.

The series will come to an end on September 6 with the final stage on a distance of two kilometres at Birzebbuga.
