In an attempt to justify the fake - sorry, but there's no other word for it - ID cards acquired by people living in Malta who pretend to live on Gozo in order to get cheaper ferry fares, Alfred Muscat (August 9) says we should take into account how much the "Maltese of Gozo" spend here over a weekend.

Perhaps we should also consider how much mainland Europeans spend in Malta over a fortnight, and give them subsidised fares on Air Malta.

Meanwhile, all these phoney "Gozitan residents" who come over with cars laden with groceries for fear of being overcharged on their "sister island" are interfering with the economic balance of the fare subsidy for those who actually need it.
