The Zurrieq Nationalist Party local councillors yesterday condemned the destruction of Snails Garden in the village by vandals on Wednesday night.
Councillor Melvyn Mangion said this garden had been built with much dedication over many years by an elderly resident.
Mr Mangion, together with Mario Paul Ellul, the other Nationalist councillor, also condemned the misuse of an open skip at Il-Karmelitani Square. Zurrieq. Mr Mangion said the bring-in sites had only been installed a couple of weeks ago.
Instead of hiring the sites from Wasteserv, the council commissioned them from a private contractor. Instead of the usual four sites - one each for paper, plastic, metal and glass, Zurrieq has five - the four skips found elsewhere plus an open skip.
This, the councillors said, has led the people not to separate their waste but to throw everything in this skip, so much so that it was quickly filling up, with waste also being thrown all around it.
The issue was discussed during a council meeting three weeks ago but the council did not agree to remove it.
Last Friday a number of dead rabbits were thrown in, to the disgust of residents who had to suffer the stench and inconvenience for three days before the contractor finally emptied it.
The two Nationalist councillors insisted this skip should be immediately removed and will be further pressing their council on this during the next meeting on Monday.
The Zurrieq Nationalist Party committee also condemned both incidents.
