Labour spokesman on tourism Evarist Bartolo has called on the government, the private sector and unions to join forces and implement an emergency plan to improve the island's beaches by expanding them and providing new parking spaces.
Malta's sea and beaches must be better safeguarded and maintained, as they are the primary reasons for drawing tourists to our shores during the summer months, Mr Bartolo said in a statement.
While measures for better access to rocky beaches must be put into place, new beaches should also be created, increasing the number of places where Maltese and tourists can enjoy the sea.
The plan should prioritise cleanliness and environmental certification, Mr Bartolo said, criticising the way in which beaches are currently being used.
He claimed that many laws and regulations are being ignored, affecting those who spend their time at the beach and those who have establishments there.
Mr Bartolo maintained that beaches are filthy, with barbeques taking place randomly and with no serious plan to protect the sand, which is decreasing and being destroyed.
