Two women charged with stealing items from a jeweller's shop in Mdina were identified following an examination of CCTV footage, the court heard yesterday.

Testifying in a case against Elaine Rapinett, 22 and Alberta Amato, 21, both of Gzira, who pleaded not guilty to stealing four gold necklaces worth Lm400 from the Maltese Falcon Jewellery in Mdina on Wednesday afternoon, Inspector Mario Tonna said the women were identified on camera.

Mr Tonna said that the women immediately handed over the stolen items when questioned by the police.

The women, both unemployed, are also pleading not guilty to committing a crime during the operative year of a suspended sentence and relapsing. Magistrate Lawrence Quintano granted them bail against a personal guarantee of Lm1,000 each.

Lawyers Josè Herrera, Roberto Montalto and Veronique Dalli appeared for the accused.
