I was never convinced about the need to have a bridge between Malta and Gozo and I am still not - if nothing else but for the adverse effects on the relatively unspoilt beauty and tranquillity of Gozo. However, in the wake of the endless spiral of fossil fuel prices and environmental repercussions, my desires may well have to be subsumed to more pressing needs.
I ask, is it reasonable to consider constructing a bridge that performs the function of an energy platform through the combined installation of wave, wind and solar generating equipment? The bridge could also be used for commercial and emergency vehicle transit and possibly provide a unique pedestrian promenade. The visual impact on the surroundings would need to be mitigated by impeccable architectural design. In spite of every reasonable objection (of which I myself have many) this could truly become a world first and a "wonder". As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of all inventions...
I am far from being an expert, but alternative thinking does not, or better still should not, hurt if constructively criticised.
