Douglas, Bezzina win second race

Birkirkara Road Running Series

Birkirkara St Joseph's James Douglas finished first in the second race from the series of 5K Road Running events, organised by his club in collaboration with the Birkirkara Local Council.

Three seconds separated the top three runners in this highly competitive race with Athleta Pembroke's Mark Herrera sprinting to second place just ahead of AS Libertas' Gerald Grech.

Douglas stopped the watch at 15 minutes 43 seconds. The battle for second place was decided in the last few metres when an improving Herrera, who placed third in the previous race, outsprinted race one winner Grech in a time of 15 minutes 45 seconds.

Lisa Bezzina of Athleta Pembroke was the first female in 17 minutes 59 seconds, ahead of the St. Patrick's duo Angela Sammut (18:26) and Giselle Camilleri (18:36).

In the clubs overall classification, Birkirkara SJ retained their top place followed by Mellieha AC in second place and St Patrick's AC in third.

The third race in this series will be held on August 29 at the Ta' Qali National Park, starting at 7 p.m. Applications may be submitted up to 30 minutes prior to the start.
