Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna (FWA) has deplored the granting of police permits for petards and other fireworks to be let off from Fort St Angelo for the feast of St Lawrence in Vittoriosa, without the parties involved having been consulted.

FWA said that, except for the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, the Police Commissioner had not consulted any of the other stakeholders, such as the Ministry for Tourism and Culture, the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage, the Cottonera Waterfront Group and the foundation.

The FWA said it has persistently objected to the letting off of fireworks from historic sites and monuments and is now objecting to them being fired from Fort St Angelo.

It said that Thursday's explosion - when a container packed with petards on a floating barge inside the Grand Harbour ignited - "should serve as a clear eye-opener to the danger that these fireworks can pose to life and limb but also to historic sites and monuments whenever they are fired from them".

No one was hurt in the incident.
