I cannot fathom the reasons that lead those in power to sanction the current Brand Malta campaign. Anecdotal evidence from friends and colleagues across the social spectrum points to a complete and utter lack of interest (or even understanding in some cases).

Yes, tourism is a contributor to the economy and sustains the livelihoods and countless businesses and lives (mine included).

Yes, we need to provide a "good experience" to our visitors and, yes, we need to use our best assets to attract and keep a good customer base; but not without a sea change in the attitude of those in power.

Until the government shows respect for the people who actually live here, who pay taxes, and have to suffer the short-sighted policies of an impotent and uninspiring administration; until the government shows respect for the environment - the beaches, the roads, our urban cores, our countryside, our infrastructure; until the government shows real respect for our collective heritage. Until then I cannot see how we can be expected to show real, honest and genuine respect to our visitors.

I live in hope.
