The National Book Council has paid tribute to Professor Fr Edward Fenech OSA, a prominent linguist of the Maltese language, critic and lecturer for many years at the University of Malta who gave an invaluable contribution to the spoken, written and printed word.

Prof. Fenech died on Saturday aged 73. The council said that through his publications on literature, Prof. Fenech managed to convey in simple terms what literature is and reached many readers in this way.

As a linguist he was one of the first to promote the study of Maltese on a scientific level.
