I refer to the article entitled Experts Attribute Painting at Palazzo Falson to Caravaggio (July 28).

I would like to point out that the painting in question had been attributed to Caravaggio by the late Capt. Olaf Gollcher who had founded the Gollcher Foundation with whom Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti established a Restoration and Management Agreement.

The late John Cauchi, as a member of the board of trustees of the Gollcher Foundation, had drawn up the first inventory wherein he had described the alleged Caravaggio as being a 17th century painting of the Neapolitan School. In view, however, of the divergent views of both local and foreign art historians, Patrimonju is still currently trying to establish the definite provenance of the painting.

In the meantime the painting is being stored in a bank vault.
