Tourism should not be turned into a political football, the ministry of tourism said yesterday, accusing the Malta Labour Party of trying to make political capital of the issue.

Referring to a press conference by Opposition Leader Alfred Sant in Paceville on Saturday, the ministry said the government strongly believed that everybody stood to gain from tourism and hence it was "everybody's business". The government had recently launched its strategic plan for tourism and appointed a new chairman for the Malta Tourism Authority, following consultation with all the stakeholders, which was the first time this had ever happened.

The ministry said the only thing the MLP was really good at was being negative and it never put forward any tangible alternatives.
