Labour leader Alfred Sant yesterday promised to give the Nationalist Party a hard time come the next council election in Mosta.

Addressing the media in Mosta square, where an "embellishment" project has been underway for the past few months, Dr Sant said the PN was taking Mosta for granted and a new Labour-led council would be good for the locality.

He said it was a shame that works in the commercial centre of the town, visited by many tourists, had been going on for so long, making the locality look more like Beirut. This was another classic example of an unfinished project by a government that promised a lot but did not deliver.

In a statement issued following Dr Sant's news conference, the Mosta council said the embellishment of the main square was in the final stages. It gave an account of all the work carried out on the project.

It added that because of the feast of Santa Marija on August 15, the works would be stopped temporarily and the rest of the paving with porfido slabs and hot asphalting could then be completed.

Problems and complications in the works were not scarce, the council lamented. The three contractors engaged on the project had taken longer than expected and therefore the work fell behind schedule, it said.

The main reason was the large concentration of underground services and the large volume of traffic which used the square, the council said.
