Permanent deacons

Permanent deacons are not almost-priests. They are ordained clerics and their role is to be a visible sign of the Church's service to the world. It's a vocation.

The Church does not ordain deacons because of the shortage of priests. Nor are they ordained to replace priests or to give priests "a rest". Deacons are ordained because there is a shortage of deacons.

Such a shortage is manifest in our Catholic islands.
