I am the mother of the unaccompanied minors mentioned in Saturday's article about the Air Malta flight diverted to Paris. My children are finally in Malta, on holiday, staying with their grandparents. I am disgusted with the service provided for my children by Air Malta!
We paid a higher than normal fare so that my children could be supervised/looked after properly. While the aircraft circled Paris for nearly an hour in a lightening/thunder storm, my 13-year-old daughter was terrified and crying. Not once was she asked if she was OK or offered any comfort by a member of the cabin crew. It was my 10-year-old son who comforted her.
When they did eventually land in Paris they were taken, after many hours, to the Hotel Mercure with a French representative. I was not contacted by Air Malta until 10 a.m. the following day to be told of this. It was only through my parents that I gleaned this information. I was not even given the French girl's name! I received another phone call from Air Malta around midday to say my children were on the 11.45 a.m. flight to Malta and I was then on the phone to my mother to check if they had landed at the due time, only to be told they were again delayed.
I also found out from my daughter that once back at Orly, for the flight to Malta, the French representative disappeared and asked an English family to "keep an eye on them". I feel this is totally unacceptable.
I went through 16 hours of sheer hell and worry. It is any mother's worst nightmare, and now my children are dreading the flight back to the UK so much that my mother is considering flying back with them.
When contacting Air Malta in the UK through my travel agent we were offered no apology and were told it wasn't their fault they had to divert the plane and that they would look into what happened to the French girl at Orly!
