Marsa consolidate lead at top of Summer League
Leyland Motors too good for locals
Marsa strengthened their position at the top of the Summer League standings with a fourth win in as many games after beating Melita on Saturday.
Marsa batted first with Ronnie Sacco leading the way with 39 runs from 30 balls. His brother Mark was 33 not out in a total of 125 runs.
Martin Llewellyn batted well for 14 runs before retiring. Marsa only lost one wicket, that of Alan Kyle for 16 runs.
Melita could only make 99 runs with three players each hitting 17 runs each. Ronnie Sacco topped his batting with three wickets.
Marsa earned eight points for the win and now head the ladder with 36 points. Melita earned no points from Saturday's match. They are at the other end of the standings with two points.
In another match, a rampant Overseas side claimed their second win in a row over Krishna. Overseas scored 197 runs, the highest score in the competition so far.
In the run spree, Mike Smith made 37, Grant Williams 36, Jonathan Tully 36 and Javed Malik 26.
In reply, Krishna could only make 109 runs with James Cross top scoring with 37 runs. Smith claimed four wickets in Overseas's victory.
Overseas claimed 10 points for the win and Krishna one bonus point.
They both have 19 points in the standings but Overseas take second place through percentage.
After the nursery activities on Saturday, Melita play Krishna and at 3 p.m. Marsa take on Overseas.
Meanwhile, Marsa played two other matches against Leyland Motors. In the first game Leyland batted first and amassed 317 runs, G. Porter top scoring with 88 runs.
Marsa had one highlight in the bowling department - Martin Llewellyn... he took four wickets.
Marsa could only muster 146 runs with Alan Kyle being top scorer with 34 runs. For the visitors, N. Afsar was the main-wicket taker with three wickets.
The visitors again batted first last Thursday and collected a satisfactory 278 runs with M. Cotton and Afsar both making 50s and A. Makinson 66 not out. Khosla was Marsa's top wicket-taker with three.
Marsa's run chase was better than the previous game but still lost by 42 runs. Mike Caruana had 46 runs and Sarfraz 36.
